The FemSTEAM Mysteries project aimed to address persistent gender inequality in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) by promoting the visibility and contributions of women in these fields. Grounded in the values of gender equality and inclusivity, the project responded to the underrepresentation of women in both STEM and the arts, as highlighted by global reports and Sustainable Development Goal 5.
Targeting students aged 12–15 and their teachers, the project introduced an innovative, game-based approach that integrated role models and digital storytelling through an educational escape room game. This methodology was designed to:
- Showcase the significant role of women in STEAM.
- Challenge gender stereotypes held by students and educators.
- Inspire girls to pursue STEAM studies and careers.
- Foster key competences and creativity for all learners.
- Equip teachers with strategies to address gender bias in STEAM education.
Key Outcomes:
- FemSTEAM Mysteries Methodological Guidelines for implementing the approach in schools.
- Two instructional guides on role-model pedagogy and game-based learning for gender equality.
- A digital mystery game engaging students in STEAM through storytelling and problem-solving.
- The FemSTEAM Mysteries online platform, hosting resources and tools.
- A blended teacher training program focused on gender-sensitive STEAM teaching.
Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the project successfully achieved its objectives, contributing to a more inclusive and inspiring STEAM education culture across Europe.
